The Journey

From a single LAN rig to Melbourne’s home of play.

We started with borrowed monitors and a lot of caffeine. A decade on, SmartMatrixHub is where casual players, ranked grinders and pro hopefuls share the same floor.

  1. 2014

    The garage LAN

    Four friends ran weekend LAN parties out of a Fitzroy garage — six machines, one power board, and a queue down the driveway.

  2. 2017

    Little Bourke Street opens

    We signed the lease on our 182 Little Bourke Street space and fitted out 24 stations with fibre and full acoustic treatment.

  3. 2020

    The Academy launches

    Our coaching program began with two ex-tier-2 coaches. Today it develops ranked and competitive players across five titles.

  4. 2022

    Custom rig workshop

    We opened an in-house build bench, assembling water-cooled machines for members and hosting monthly hardware clinics.

  5. 2025

    42 stations & counting

    A full refit brought us to 42 RTX-class stations, a streaming room and a barista bar — all still on the same laneway.

Off-peak (10am–5pm weekdays) you can usually walk straight in and grab any open station. For evenings, weekends and tournament nights we strongly recommend booking a bay online, as peak slots fill quickly. Grinder Pass and Academy members get priority booking windows.

We’re open every day from 10am to 11pm, including public holidays. Tournament nights on Fridays run later, with the floor open until midnight for registered competitors.

Absolutely. Our Academy coaches work with everyone from first-time PC players to ranked grinders chasing the top ladder. Beginners usually start with a fundamentals session covering settings, aim mechanics and game sense before moving into structured VOD reviews.

Yes — our in-house build bench assembles custom water-cooled and air-cooled rigs to your budget and title of choice. Members get 10% off parts and labour, and you’re welcome to watch the build come together and ask questions along the way.

Every station runs Steam, Epic Games, EA App and Xbox Game Pass for PC, so you’ve got access to hundreds of titles including the major esports games. If we don’t have something installed, just ask the front desk and we’ll load it for you.

We host birthdays, corporate team nights and clan events regularly. We can reserve a block of stations or the whole tournament stage, and can arrange catering from neighbouring Little Bourke Street venues. Email us with your date and headcount for a quote.

Players under 15 are welcome until 8pm when accompanied by a guardian or as part of a booked youth session. After 8pm the lounge is 15+, and some M-rated tournament titles are restricted per Australian classification guidelines.
